Mission Statement

The intent of the Extreme Emergency Hotel Stay, Energy, Housing, Furniture and Food Assistance Program is to 1) provide hotel accommodations for elderly Tribal Member 62 and older (without children) when the family is experiencing a natural disaster that displaces individuals from the use of their home; 2) to assist with energy bills for elder Tribal members (55 older) or disabled individuals and/or Tribal members who have a medical condition that requires electricity to operate medical equipment; 3) to provide monetary assistance when applicant is about to be evicted from apartment or foreclosure on primary residence; 4) furniture assistance when the replacement of essential furniture is needed due to natural disaster or fire damage or when a child is placed in foster or relative placement, and 5) food assistance when electricity has been turned off for 48 consecutive hours. Puyallup Tribe Children’s Services will be notified to perform a Health and Safety Welfare Check when applicable.

Assistance Provided

1. Hotel Stay: Maximum stay authorized is 4 days

Eligibility requirements:

  • Enrolled Puyallup Tribal Member 62 and older only (no children);
  • A natural disaster that deems the residence unsafe for occupation.

Applicant must:

  • Provide documentation that verifies situation.

2. Energy Assistance: Qualified Members can access energy assistance once per year; maximum of $500.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Elderly Tribal Member 55 years and older or disabled individual who is living at home without an able-bodied adult to handle financial matters, i.e. electricity bills (must provide shut off notice); or medical situation that requires utility assistance to operate medical equipment.

Applicant must:

  • Provide copies of shut off notices; and
  • Have exhausted other energy assistance resources.

3. Housing Assistance:

  • Up to $1,000 per year;
  • Funding is allocated from October-September.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Must be an enrolled Puyallup Tribal member (with children);
  • About to be evicted from apartment or rental unit; or
  • Mortgage is in foreclosure.

Applicant must:

  • Provide eviction notice, or
  • Provide mortgage foreclosure document.

4. Furniture Assistance: Surplus Furniture (beds and dressers)

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be an enrolled Puyallup Tribal member;
  • Must be experiencing a natural disaster; or a
  • Puyallup Tribal member child who is in foster care or relative placement needing furniture assistance.

Applicant must:

  • Provide documentation of natural disaster, i.e., FEMA report, fire damage report, etc.;
  • Provide documentation of foster care or relative placement via court order or guardianship, if applying on behalf of Puyallup Tribal Member child;
  • Applicant will be responsible for the transportation of furniture.

5. Food Assistance (Once per Fiscal Year)

Eligibility requirements:

  • Must be an enrolled Puyallup Tribal Member;
  • Must be 18 years and older;
  • Must have had utilities shut off for over 48 consecutive hours;
  • Provide documentation that unit is primary residence; and
  • Documentation that utilities have been shut off for over 48 consecutive hours.

Amounts available:

  • Can apply once per year. If requesting additional assistance, must get approval from Tribal Council;
  • Family of 4 or more $100; or
  • Family of 3 or less $50.
