Mission

The intent of the Puyallup Tribe’s Family Violence program is to provide immediate response to all victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. The primary goal is to establish safety and comfort immediately after victimization. Follow-up services are also provided to promote healing, empowerment and justice for victims.

Accomplishments (FYI 2007)

  • Provided services to 287 clients of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. Services include: crisis intervention, follow-up contacts, information and referrals, legal and medical advocacy, shelter, food, clothing, transportation and safety planning;
  • Facilitated 40 weekly women’s support groups, providing transportation and childcare;
  • Purchased a variety of books, videos and publications on domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, healing, empowerment, and spirituality for staff, clients and the community;
  • Participated in the following presentations and events (distribution of information on domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking): Pierce College Criminal Justice class, Pierce College Annual Victim Impact Panel and Resource Fair, Pierce College work and health fair, Three Pow-wows, Annual Healing Drum Circle and Candlelight Vigil, Kwawachee Health and Wellness Fair,Healthy Children, Healthy Future Fair, Tacoma First Nations Gathering, Youth Violence Prevention Week Kick Off Event, Tribal Youth’s Mother’s Day Event and Stop The Violence Peace Walk;
  • Program staff are involved in a variety of Tribal and non-Tribal coalitions and committees;
  • Attended the following trainings and conferences: Family Violence Prevention Conference, In Our Best Interest and Community Organizing and Public Education.

Future Goals

  • Implement Tribal Language thoughout Family Violence office;
  • Continue weekly Women’s Support Groups;
  • Develop Domestic Violence (Tran-sitional) Shelter Program;
  • Write/submit articles for Tribal News regarding the prevention and intervention of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking;
  • Develop a culturally relevant handbook on domestic violence;
  • Attend domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking trainings and conferences to enhance knowledge, skills and abilities;
  • Participate in presentations and community events;
  • Organize and participate in our Annual Healing Drum Circle and Candlelight Vigil;
  • Conduct quarterly presentations for the Criminal Justice Program at Pierce College;
  • Collaborate with other Tribal Programs and community agencies to develop policies, procedures and protocols in addressing violence, victim safety and holding offenders accountable.
